Consumer acceptance of genetically modified rapeseed-oil: A discrete-choice-experiment AgEcon
Klein, Agnes; Zapilko, Marina; Menrad, Klaus; Gabriel, Andreas.
This paper deals with consumer acceptance of genetically modified rapeseed-oil in Germany and analyzes under which conditions consumers would buy such products. To investigate this subject a Discrete-Choice-Experiment was performed within the framework of a cross-European consumer survey in spring 2007. The results show that consumers’ utility is increased by an organically produced product and decreased by a GM product. Thereby the association with individual advantages (health benefits) decreases consumers’ utility less compared to the association with environmental benefits. Additionally, it could be shown that German consumers prefer locally produced rapeseed-oil compared to imported. If GM products exhibit a considerable price discount compared to...

Cost of GMO-related co-existence and traceability systems in food production in Germany AgEcon
Menrad, Klaus; Gabriel, Andreas; Zapilko, Marina.
In contrast to the increasing use of GM plants in world-wide agriculture, the acceptance of GM food is still low in the European Union (EU). In order to ensure freedom of choice for consumers and users of GM and non-GM products, GM food and feed products have to be labeled in case a tolerance threshold of 0.9 % is exceeded for EU authorized GMOs. This paper aims to quantify the cost of traceability and co-existence systems for GM food from the seed to the food level for sugar, wheat starch and rapeseed oil for human consumption in Germany respecting the 0.9 % threshold for labelling of GM food. The cost calculation for traceability and co-existence measures follows the principle of aggregating all incurred cost on the different levels of the value chain...

Cross-European and functional food related consumer segmentation for new product development AgEcon
Sparke, Kai; Menrad, Klaus.
Functional Food emerged as a constant segment in the European food market and offer potential for product innovations which make them attractive for the food industry in nearly stagnating markets. Target group research is one key factor for successful innovative food products. The aim of this project was to develop and test a Functional Food related consumer segmentation model. For this purpose a survey was conducted in Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland and Spain with a total of 590 respondents. Factor analysis revealed consumers' motivation to buy or to refuse Functional Food. Motives, consumers' knowledge about Functional Food, their trust towards diverse actors in the context of nutrition and their purchase pattern were used in a cluster analysis and...

DIMENSIONEN DER VERBRAUCHERRESONANZ BEI DER NEUPRODUKTBEURTEILUNG VON LEBENSMITTELN (German) AgEcon
Sparke, Kai; Menrad, Klaus.

Innovations at the Borderline of Food, Nutrition and Health in Germany - A Systems' Theory Approach AgEcon
Menrad, Klaus.
This article deals with the innovation system in Germany at the borderline of food, nutrition and health. After an overview over existing concepts to analyse innovations in system theory, the major factors (technologies, economic competence, institutional infrastructure, development block) are studied which determine the innovation system in this area in Germany. Afterwards recommendations are outlined on how to modify the innovation system in future.

KONSEQUENZEN DER WELTWEIT ZUNEHMENDEN VERBREITUNG GENTECHNISCH VERÄNDERTER PFLANZEN IN DER LEBENS- UND FUTTERMITTELPRODUKTION IN DEUTSCHLAND AgEcon
Hirzinger, Tobias; Menrad, Klaus.

ORGANISATION UND BEWERTUNG DES QUALITY MANAGEMENTS BEI DER HERSTELLUNG GENTECHNIK FREIER PRODUKTE AM BEISPIEL DER RAPS- UND SOJAVERARBEITUNG (German) AgEcon
Hirzinger, Tobias; Menrad, Klaus; Bez, Jurgen.
